The Cortisol Reset — Stretch & Breathe Routine
Two short sequences, one for morning and one for evening, built to work with your body's natural cortisol rhythm rather than against it.
Move slow, hold long, and breathe through the nose with a longer exhale than inhale throughout. This sequence works with your natural morning cortisol peak — energizing, not sedating.
1
Diaphragmatic breathing
1 min
Standing, feet hip-width. One hand on your belly. Breathe in through the nose and feel your hand rise, exhale slowly through the nose or mouth.
2
Standing side bends
30 sec / side
Reach one arm overhead and lean gently to the opposite side, opening the ribcage. Let the breath lead the movement, not the other way around.
3
Cat-cow
1 min
On hands and knees. Inhale as you arch and lift the chest, exhale as you round the spine. Slow tempo — this isn't a warm-up pace.
4
World's greatest stretch
45 sec / side
Step into a low lunge, drop the back knee, and rotate your torso toward the front leg, reaching one arm up.
5
Neck rolls & jaw release
1 min
Slow half-circles with the head, then let the jaw hang loose for a few breaths. This is where a lot of unnoticed tension sits.
6
Standing forward fold
1 min
Fold forward from the hips, knees soft. Let your head and arms hang heavy.
Optional: once you're settled, add a gentle side-to-side sway.
7
Arm circles
1–2 min
One arm at a time — small circles growing larger, then reverse direction. Switch sides.
8
Gentle standing sway
1 min
Eyes closed, arms and shoulders relaxed. Let your body sway intuitively — no set pattern, just movement that feels good.
9
Open chest standing — finisher
30–45 sec
Stand tall, roll the shoulders back and down, and open the chest with palms facing forward. Close the routine here — a few full breaths, upright and open.
Mostly floor-based, mostly still. The goal is parasympathetic down-shift — signaling to your nervous system that the day is done.
1
Knees-to-chest, knee rolls
2–3 min
Lying down, hug both knees to your chest, then slowly roll them side to side, letting the lower back release with each pass.
2
Seated forward fold
1 min
Legs extended or crossed, fold forward without forcing it. Let gravity do the work.
3
Butterfly stretch, with sway
1 min
Soles of the feet together, knees relaxed out to the sides. Fold gently forward, then add a soft side-to-side sway through the hips.
4
Supine spinal twist
1 min / side
Lying on your back, drop both knees to one side while keeping shoulders grounded. Let the twist deepen with each exhale.
5
Child's pose
2 min
Knees wide, hips back toward the heels, forehead down. This is the longest hold in the sequence — let it be boring.
6
Jaw & face release
1 min
Soften the jaw, gently tilt the head side to side to release the neck.
7
Box breathing, lying down
2–3 min
Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat. Let this be the last thing you do before you close your eyes for the night.
